New Ulaanbaatar International Airport (UBN) opens

On July 4th, a new Ulaanbaatar international airport made an official opening.

The first aircraft to officially arrive as well as the first international travel (Ulaanbaatar-Tokyo) was of MIAT Mongolian Airlines. 

The constantly-delayed airport (ICAO: UBN) is a long-going joint Mongolian-Japanese project that will be operated primarily under Japanese management team for 15 years with the aim to become one of the main transit hubs in the region.


The new airport inherited <<Chinggis Khaan>> name from now old international airport leaving the latter with its original name - Buyant-Ukhaa. 

 Chinggis Khaan International Airport will have a capacity of 3 million passengers per year and 11,900 tons of cargo.  The airport features 24 aircraft parking slots, 43 meter high control tower, 8,000 ton fuel storage and independent heating and power electricity grid.

The newly-elected President of Mongolia, Mr. Khurelsukh Ukhnaa and the Ambassador of Japan to Mongolia, Mr. Kobayashi Hiroyuki have opened an indoor monument for Mongolian-Japanese friendship as a part of the opening ceremony.

The airport will be the main hub in Mongolia for international operators such as Air China, Aeroflot - Russian Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Korean Air, Asiana Airlines Inc., Air Busan and Kazakhstan's SCAT Airlines.

All national airlines such as MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Aero Mongolia, Hunnu Air and Eznis Airways LLC will be also operating their international flights from this airport. However, all or most domestic flights by these national airlines will be operated primarily from Buyant-Ukhaa (ICAO: ULN) airport.
